Orleans, Massachusetts Cardinals CF Ollie Linton (UC Irvine) stole five bases, reached base in all four plate appearances, and scored three runs to help lead Orleans to a 6-2 victory over Harwich. The game was called with no outs in the seventh inning due to fog.
The game was delayed for 42 minutes due to fog in the bottom of the third inning. At the time, the Cardinals led 2-0.
Orleans picked up their first run of the game after just three batters when 1B Dennis Raben (Miami, FL) drove in 2B Alden Carrithers (UCLA). Carrithers led-off with a double to left and moved to third on a bunt single by Linton.
Linton reached base again when he was walked in the third. He proceeded to steal second base and was knocked in by a Raben double. The run gave Orleans the 2-0 lead.
LHP Pat McAnaney (Virginia) started the game for the Cards and continued to pitch following the fog delay. McAnaney, pitching in his final Cape Cod League game, threw five innings and allowed just one run on two hits. He struck out five and was the winning pitcher.
“I thought he threw the ball well. He threw more changeups which we talked about in his last start and he did that. His breaking ball was good. He could be pitching professionally right now and we’re lucky to have him. He did a nice job and I thought it was a good way for him to finish the summer,” Manager Kelly Nicholson said.
The Cardinals held onto a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning and took advantage of the Harwich bullpen. After knocking Mariners LHP Ryan Kulik (Rowan) out of the game, Orleans scored three in the fifth thanks, in part, to a two-run double by SS Brandon Crawford (UCLA).
A run by Harwich in the sixth made the score 5-2 but Orleans quickly rebounded and took that run back in the bottom half. LF Nate Freiman (Duke) hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Linton.
“A couple of times I had a sign but I just got into a rhythm. I got comfortable with the looks of the pitcher’s pickoff move and the pitches they were throwing to Raben and I just picked the right pitch to go on,” Linton said about his five steal, fog shortened night.
The game was delayed again, and ultimately called, just four pitches into the top of the seventh. The game officially ended with the Cardinals winning, 6-2. The win is the 22nd of the season for Orleans and ensures that they will finish the year with yet another winning record. The Cardinals have now had six consecutive winning seasons.
