Cardinals Announce Initial 2008 Roster
January 23, 2008
Orleans,
Massachusetts
The Orleans Cardinals announced their initial roster for the
summer of 2008 this afternoon. Headlining the team are five
players returning from last year’s squad, a pair of high school
teammates, and some incredibly talented freshman.
The Cardinals will welcome five college baseball stars back to
Orleans
for another exciting summer of Cape Cod League baseball. LHP Rob
Catapano (North Carolina), 1B Nate Freiman (Duke), RHP Kyle Kamppi
(Georgia Southern), C Hampton Tignor (Florida) and C Travis Tartamella
(Pepperdine) will all be back for their second year in a Cardinals
uniform.
Catapano led the team in ERA, posting a remarkable 0.92 mark
in 19.2 innings for Orleans.
Freiman, who hails from nearby Wellesly, Mass. was one of the Cardinals best
hitters in 2007. He finished second on the team in hitting
(.286), slugging (.374) and RBIs (28).
Manager Kelly Nicholson will also welcome LHP Eric Erickson (Miami) to Orleans. Erickson was a high
school teammate of Tignor’s at Sarasota
High School in Sarasota, Fla. The lefty was the best
pitcher on a solid Hurricanes team in 2007, leading the pitching staff
with a 10-4 record. He posted a 2.50 ERA in 90 innings pitched
facing some top notch competition in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Joining Erickson for the first time in the Cape Cod League
will be some highly touted freshman in LHP Rob Rasmussen (UCLA), 2B/OF
Gary Brown (Cal State Fullerton) and SS Christian Colon (Cal State
Fullerton).
Rasmussen was 38-2 with a 1.04 ERA throughout his four year
high school career at Polytechnic
School in Pasadena, Calif. The southpaw was
selected in the 27th round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Los
Angeles Dodgers.
Brown and Colon
are anxiously awaiting their collegiate debuts with Cal State
Fullerton. The freshman tandem were two of the most sought after
recruits in the high school class of 2007 and landed as teammates for
the nationally ranked Titans under new head coach Dave Serrano.
Brown hit an impressive .612 with four homeruns as a senior
while picking up a variety of awards including being named to Baseball America’s
All-America Second Team. He was drafted in the 12th
round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
Colon,
a slick fielder with quick feet, is expected to be the starting
shortstop for the Titans this spring. The Corona, Calif.
native was named MVP of the Aflac All-American High School Baseball
Classic in 2006 and hit .435 during his senior season.
The 2008 Cardinals come from every corner of the country
including players from 10 different states and 20 unique schools
representing 13 conferences.
