Former Orleans Cardinals LHP Eric Surkamp (NC State) and SS Brandon Crawford (UCLA) were both named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List which is given annually to the top player in college baseball by USA Baseball.
Surkamp spent part of two summers with Orleans. The left-handed pitcher was 2-0 and posted a 1.85 ERA in five appearances last year before joining Team USA. He struck out 26 batters in just 24.1 innings pitched. Surkamp also had a successful summer in 2006 with the Cards as he went 3-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 13 games.
The starting shortstop for the 2007 squad, Brandon Crawford will look to display his outstanding abilities this spring for UCLA. Crawford smacked four homeruns and drove in 14 RBIs last summer for the Cardinals.
The initial Golden Spikes Award Watch List features 75 of the nation’s top collegiate talents as nominated by baseball sports information directors across the country. The award is sponsored by Major League Baseball and 2008 marks the 31st installment of the award. The winner will be announced on July 16th, 2008.
Past recipients of the award include former Cape Cod League players such as Jason Varitek (1994), Mark Kotsay (1995), Pat Burrell (1998) and Khalil Greene (2002).
