Five Cardinals Announced for 2008 Wallace Award Watch List

The College Baseball Foundation released the 2008 Brooks Wallace Award Pre-Season Watch List last month and there were five players on the list with ties to the Orleans Cardinals.

1B Nate Freiman (Duke), UTIL Mark Sobolewski (Miami, FL) and OF Jon Gaston (Arizona) were among the players on the list played for the Cardinals last summer.  Freiman finished second on the team in hitting (.286), slugging (.374) and RBIs (28).  Gaston played 28 games for the Cards in the outfield hitting .256 and swiping seven bases while scoring 16 runs.  Sobolewski was an integral part of the team as he played a variety of positions for the Cardinals while driving in ten runs and stealing five bases.

Also named to the Wallace Watch List are two future Cardinals, LHP Eric Erickson (Miami, FL) and OF Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount).  Erickson is expected to be the Hurricanes’ No. 1 starter in 2008 as he returns to the ‘Canes after winning ten games last spring and recording a 2.50 ERA.  He was third on the team in strikeouts, fanning 63 batters.  Songco comes to Orleans from Loyola Marymount where he had a phenomenal freshman campaign earning Freshman All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball and being named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year.  The Granada Hills, Calif. native also was selected on the All-WCC and All-WCC Freshman teams.  He hit .321 for the Lions and led the team in doubles (22), RBIs (23) and slugging (.528).

Freiman is also expected to return to Orleans this summer.

The Brooks Wallace Award is presented to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s annual induction festivities.  The 2008 award banquet will be held Thursday, July 3, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.
