Orleans Falls to Brewster
July 28, 2009By Tyler Maland
Brewster got its first two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double to right center by Jarrett Parker (Virginia). Glynn gave up six hits in the first two innings before a double and the home-run in the third, but three of those eight hits were infield singles. The short outing gave the Orleans bullpen plenty of work. Casey Gaynor (Rutgers) finished the third, Matt Hiserman (San Francisco) pitched the next three, Brock Stassi (Nevada) the seventh and Tommy Kahnle (Lynn) the eighth. The four relievers were up to the task, and combined for 5.2 scoreless innings while giving up just three hits. Steven Maxwell (TCU) was the Whitecaps starter and got the win with 5 innings pitched, five hits, and one earned run. Stayton Thomas (Texas) pitched 2.2 innings of relief and surrendered the other Orleans run, and Tyler Thornburg (Charleston Southern) got a four-out save, striking out three. Orleans got its first run in the fourth inning when third baseman Michael Olt (Connecticut) doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Danny Muno (Fresno St.). The only other Firebirds run came in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Jeremy Gould (Duke). The Firebirds did compile nine hits on the day, but never strung together more than two in an inning. Riccio Torrez (Arizona St.) went 2-for-3 with a triple, and is 6-for-9 in his last three games. Hampton Tignor (Florida) and Gould also had two hits apiece. Brewster leadoff man Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia) went 3-for-4, Martinez was 1-for-3 with the homer, and Tant Shepherd (Texas) had two hits. The Firebirds drop to 19-16-1 and remain second in the East. They will host Falmouth for a 7:00 p.m. game Wednesday night at Eldridge Park. Brewster is now 15-16-4, and will play at Chatham Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
