Firebirds Bats Come Alive in 9-3 Win at Bourne
July 6, 2009

Bourne, Mass.
– After scoring just one run in two games against Chatham over the
weekend, the Orleans Firebirds found their offensive firepower Monday
night at Bourne, defeating the Western-Division-leading Braves
9-3. Orleans got another
noteworthy performance from its pitching staff, but this time it was
the bats that roughed up a Bourne team that started the game with a
scorching 1.94 team ERA, the best in the Cape League.
Orleans
improves to 10-8 with the win, while Bourne falls to 10-6. This
was supposed to be the third meeting between the teams, but each of the
first two games was postponed due to weather. Orleans
will be back at home Tuesday and Wednesday for 7:00 pm matchups against
Y-D and Hyannis.
Bourne, which had won eight of ten coming into the game, will travel to
Harwich for a 7:00 pm contest Tuesday evening.
Jimmy Reyes (Elon) got the win for Orleans, and is now 2-1. Reyes
pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs and walking
one while striking out six. Cameron Roth (UNC Wilmington) started
for Bourne and threw just three innings, giving up three hits, four
runs (two earned) and one walk without striking out a batter.
Orleans
was sparked all night by leadoff hitter Gary Brown (CS Fullerton),
who went 2-for-4 and scored four of the nine Firebirds runs. Orleans put runs
on the board in three of the first four innings and added four
insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to put the game out of
Bourne’s reach.
While Brown sped around the base paths all night, several
other Firebirds contributed to the offensive outburst. Devin
Lohman (Long Beach
State)
was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs of his own. Ross
Heffley (Western Carolina) and Alex
Hassan (Duke) had two RBI’s each, and Heffley in particular
showcased his skills at the plate with an unusual line on the
scoresheet. He had four sacrifices on the night, with successful
sacrifice bunts in three different innings and a sacrifice fly in the
eighth.
The Orleans
bullpen was also impressive for the third straight night. Matt
Packer (Virginia) and Brett
Weibley (Kent
State)
each pitched one inning of relief and had the exact same line, allowing
no hits or walks and striking out one each.
